Portable Greenhouse Do’s and Don’ts
By Virginia Slate | April 29, 2009
If you’re like many home gardeners you might not know about the many benefits that portable greenhouses have to offer. These portable structures come in many different sizes from smaller to larger and are fairly easy to put together. The main benefit is that you have the option of extending your planting season from earlier in the spring to later in the fall. Also, for people living in condos or apartments, portable greenhouse can be very convenient because you can still plant a garden even though you don’t have a yard.
Another perk is that because the structure isn’t permanent you can move it wherever you need it to be. If one area of your yard receives more sunlight or if you need certain plants to receive more shade you can move them anywhere and still keep them in an optimum environment. This can also provide you with an opportunity to grow a variety of plants even if they have different requirements.
If you’d like to grow plants and vegetables but don’t have room for a garden outside there are many small portable greenhouses available that fit nicely indoors and don’t take up a lot of space. You can use them to overwinter sensitive plants or to start new seeds for planting outside later in the spring or fall. You can even use them for growing a small herb garden if you like to cook. There are many options available for these little greenhouses depending on your needs and requirements.
You don’t have to be a master gardener to take advantage of the many benefits a portable greenhouse has to offer. In fact, these little structures are probably more useful for those that are new to the world of gardening. They can allow you to practice your skills before committing yourself to a large outdoor garden. Even if you decide later on that you don’t like gardening you can simply pack up your little greenhouse and move on to something else.
If you live in an apartment or condominium, a portable greenhouse will also make a nice addition to your patio or deck. This can be very handy if you don’t have a yard to call your own wherever you live. These small greenhouse usually comes in kits but are simple to assemble and can be moved easily. Be sure to secure your greenhouse down so it doesn’t blow away in windy weather. Some greenhouses will require more reinforcement than others.
Some portable greenhouse kits include ropes and tie-downs but you may want to purchase additional supplies to secure your structure even further. Some people use buckets filled with water to hold down the floor of their greenhouse while others use bags filled with sand. Either way, you want to make sure your greenhouse is secure enough to survive the elements.
If you’re thinking about purchasing a greenhouse you should take the time to study all the different types of portable greenhouse kits available to find which one suits your situation the best. You don’t want to end up with a kit that is either too big or too small for where you intend to keep it. It should also be easy to move and store if you don’t plan on keeping it up all year long.
